I sculpt in a variety of media because I find the three-dimensional aspects more intriguing, more exciting and more challenging than two-dimensional renderings. Even though I am an avid appreciator of two-dimensional art, I most enjoy and receive satisfaction from conjuring three-dimensional ideas and rotating them in my mind until there is balance and excitement.

I derive many of my ideas and inspirations from my physical surroundings and extrapolate those visions into abstract and geometric shapes and designs. A great deal of my work incorporates spheres, circles and curves. I juxtapose shapes with negative space. I like to use negative space as much as positive.

My sculptures are inspired by the likes of Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, and Frank Lloyd Wright. The colors of Miro, Calder's mobiles, Wright's repetitive, rectangular elements and his signature "Cherokee red" are paid homage in my sculptures. Local geographic features or landmarks are often integrated into my sculptures.

Site-specific research allows me to incorporate icons or images reminiscent of individual locations. Research is the crux of my sculptures as I probe into the people, the place, and the purpose whether it is public art or privately commissioned. Extensive worldwide travel has influenced my art. Many of my sculptures incorporate cultural aspects of a community or site. Although I currently work with powder coated or stainless steel, I have designed pieces made with exotic woods, bronze, copper and oxidized metal.

I have a fascination with mobiles which has surfaced in my art periodically over the past 30 years. My art is abstract, often minimal and sometimes architectural, sometimes as small as a deck weight or as large as a 25-foot high public or private commission. I approach commissions as a joint venture, integrating the client 's desires with my artist's instincts.
